Welcome to the Sea of Domains
What is the Sea of Domains?
The Sea of Domains, or just the Sea, is a collection of domain names controlled by a single, non-profit, organization
With these domains in hand, we intend to make the domains themselves like water in the ocean
The internet runs on the backbone of DNS. We plan to use that fact to store knowledge as immutable DNS TXT records with mass redundancy
What is the Sea For?
The preservation and dissemination of knowledge
Private wealth has far too great an interest in controlling the narrative
Already governmental, academic, and open-sourced knowledge is at risk
With thousands of immutable copies any attempts to alter or prevent access to information can be stopped
What We Need
Support - currently we is one person. I can do all of the individual pieces if I have to, but that would take a long, long time
This needs to become a real non-profit organization - this is time-consuming and requires expertise
This will need to be funded - but that will come as institutions realize they need somewhere their knowledge can't be perverted
Network and software engineers - this is not going to be simple - if this sounds like your thing sign on up!
The Basics
Domains are purchased or donated and held by the Sea
Once owned - the domain doesn't matter - it is part of the sea
What does matter is the organization of the information
Each domain will have some subset of information contained in the Sea
Once a record is created it cannot be changed, as verified by hash
Updates come in a git-like fashion - a new record with the modified information is added
A chain of hashed values guarantees that all information has not been modified
DNS is not the most efficient way to store data - but it is one of the most immutable
DNS is also not the most efficient way to retrieve data - but it is one of the most ubiquitous
With the right software we can make the retrieval as easy as possible
With the right software we can make the storage as efficient as possible
With the right software we can make the Sea a place where knowledge is truly free
